They say toss is a game-changing factor despite cussing luck and superstition to look cool. However, a captain knows what agony the flip of a coin can bring in the modern age of cricket where the dynamics shift with every delivery being bowled.

As India clashed with England in the first Test match of the five-match affair, Virat Kohli lost another toss to surpass MS Dhoni and become the captain with the highest number of defeats in a toss by an Indian captain in Test cricket.

Going by the statistics of Kausthub Gudipathi, Kohli lost his 35th toss today and in the process overcame Dhoni’s 34 to become India’s unluckiest captain in the longest format of the game.

India has seen the ugly side of fortunes on countless occasions with their latest defeat after losing the match coming at the hands of New Zealand in the WTC final and experts believe that it was a very crucial toss to lose.

Another interesting piece of stat that has been doing the rounds is that Kohli also became the captain with the highest number of toss defeats away from home in a single country with 6 toss defeats in England.

The infamous second spot is shared by MS Dhoni with 5 toss defeats in England, Kapil Dev with 5 toss defeats in West Indies, Ajit Wadekar with 5 toss defeats in England and once again Kohli himself with 5 toss defeats in West Indies.

Most tosses lost by an Indian captain in away Tests in a country:-
6 – Virat Kohli in ENG
5 – Kapil Dev in WI
5 – Ajit Wadekar in ENG
5 – MS Dhoni in ENG
5 – Virat Kohli in WI

Keeping aside the fortune factor, toss does play a key role in shaping up the outcomes of the match, especially in places like England and New Zealand where the ball moves by a good deal.

Sadly, Kohli despite being a reckoning force with the willow in the hand, couldn’t really come to grips with the flipping coin that always tends to deceive him in the end.
