India is known to be a country with a lot of superstitions and everybody is constantly coming up with something new every single day. This has extended to our favourite cricketers too, and they have their own little superstitions to put them at ease before playing a big match or series. Here are some of the most popular superstitions amongst the Indian players:
Shikhar Dhawan:
The left-handed batsman is known to be a relaxed character and he extends that facet of his game onto the pitch as well. While facing opposition, Dhawan has taken a leaf out of Virender Sehwag’s book and likes to sing in the middle!
He is one of the best batsmen in world cricket at the moment and bagged the man of the series in the Test matches against the Lankans. He was also the man of the match in the first ODI. As long as the singing helps, he should continue.
Virat Kohli:
The Indian captain does not have any prominent superstitions but he does have the peculiar habit of wearing the same gloves that he scores runs with. He has always kept them with him and tried to use the same pair while batting.
He also wears a “kada”, which is a type of bracelet popular amongst Punjabis as he believes it brings him luck.
Yuvraj Singh:
Though he finds himself out of the team at the moment, Yuvraj was a legendary figure in the squad and was always helping the youngsters feel at ease. He does not have many major superstitions but does wear the number 12 jersey as it is his birthdate and lucky number.
He also sports something known as a “kalava”, which is a sacred black thread on his wrist to signify his belief in the Almighty.
Ravichandran Ashwin:
The spin master of the Indian team is a strong believer in superstition and he has a lucky bag that he believes helps him win matches. He feels that the bag is lucky for the team even if it isn’t as lucky for him as an individual.
Ashwin carried the bag all over during the 2011 World Cup and what happened to the Indian team at the end of World Cup is known to everyone.
MS Dhoni:
The former World Cup winning captain is always a calm and composed member on the field and it is a well-known fact that he has a small superstition with regards to his jersey number. Dhoni wears the number 7 as he was born on the 7th of July, which is the 7th month.
He has always worn that jersey number and looking at the number of wins he has racked up, it is safe to say that it bears some charm.
