3 Times Indian Cricketers Wore A Teammate’s Jersey On The Field

3 Times Indian Cricketers Wore A Teammate's Jersey On The Field

3 Times Indian Cricketers Wore A Teammate’s Jersey On The Field: A cricketer’s jersey is more than just a piece of clothing – it is a symbol of identity and allegiance. This jersey, emblazoned with the player’s name and chosen number, helps teammates and spectators alike to quickly identify the player on the field. Normally, each cricketer sports their own unique jersey during a match. However, over the years, certain unusual circumstances have seen cricketers swapping jerseys with teammates.

Take the example of the first One Day International (ODI) between India and the West Indies, held on Thursday, July 27, in Barbados. In a rare sight, Suryakumar Yadav stepped onto the field wearing Sanju Samson’s jersey. The reason? Samson, who was not part of the Indian playing XI, had offered his jersey to Yadav due to a size issue and delayed delivery of Yadav’s replacement jersey.

Interestingly, this incident was not a one-off case. Over time, there have been a handful of such instances involving Indian cricketers. Delving into these peculiar incidents, three standout examples come to mind.

3 Times Indian Cricketers Wore A Teammate’s Jersey On The Field:

#1 Suresh Raina Honours MS Dhoni’s Legacy: The First Instance of Jersey Swap

Rewind to 2014-15, when MS Dhoni surprisingly announced his retirement from Test cricket. This marked the first instance when a cricketer, Suresh Raina, donned a teammate’s jersey. Dhoni gifted his double XL jersey, number 251, to his close friend Raina, signifying that he would never wear the Test whites again. In the fourth Test of that series against Australia, Raina played wearing Dhoni’s jersey. Alas, it was to be Raina’s last Test match for India, where he scored a pair of ducks at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

#2 The West Indies Tour Conundrum: Deepak Hooda in Prasidh Krishna’s Jersey

The next jersey swap occurrence happened during India’s tour of the West Indies. All-rounder Deepak Hooda was spotted wearing Prasidh Krishna‘s jersey during the second ODI of the series. Despite the mix-up, Hooda had a commendable game, scoring 33 runs and taking one wicket.

Most recently, during the same tour, Suryakumar Yadav found himself once again wearing a teammate’s jersey. Owing to some logistical issues, Yadav had to wear Arshdeep Singh’s jersey for a Twenty20 International (T20I) match against the West Indies. Yadav, opening the batting for India, scored 11 runs off six balls before being dismissed by Obed McCoy.

Despite the inevitable amusement that arises from these jersey swap incidents, they can also play tricks on a cricketer’s performance. It seems that Yadav, in particular, hasn’t managed to score big while wearing another player’s jersey. For the next match, Yadav might prefer to have his own named jersey in a perfect fit ready and waiting.

While jersey swaps remain an oddity in the world of cricket, they remind us of the camaraderie and unity among team members. In the end, the number and name on the back of a jersey might vary, but the commitment to play for their country remains unwavering in every player’s heart.
