India has known to have produced some of the greatest cricketers to have played the game. Some players, like MS Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly, and Kapil Dev were born leaders who led the team to tremendous success over the years.
However, there have been Indian-origin players who have gone to foreign shores and captained successfully there too. Here are five of the best:
Nasser Hussain:
The former English captain was born in Chennai and made his debut for the Three Lions back in 1989. Following Michael Atherton’s retirement, Hussain took over as the captain of the country and led them to 17 Test victories in the 45 Tests that he captained.
He followed it up with many wins abroad and finally called time on his playing career in 2004. He is now a full-time commentator with Sky Sports.
Rohan Kanhai:
The West Indies team of the 70s was the best in the world with some absolute legends walking out and gracing the pitches of the Caribbean and worldwide. The captain of the side was Rohan Kanhai, who was of Indian origin and he had made his debut back in 1957.
He retired in 1974 after having captained West Indies to 3 Test wins and 7 draws. He was also their first ODI captain. He scored 6000 runs before calling time.

Hashim Amla:
The backbone of the South African batting line-up, Hashim Amla is one of the modern greats of the game and is continuing to show his importance for the national team. The opener is actually of Gujarati descent with his ancestors moving to SA many years back.
The devout Muslim led the South Africans for 14 Tests, losing 4 and winning 4. He also led them for 9 ODIs and 2 T20Is.
Ashish Bagai:
The Delhi-born batsman was the captain of the fledgling Canadian cricket team and represented them for more than a decade. He was also their captain for 6 years and played 62 ODIs and 9 T20Is.
He led them to 4 wins as captain of the national team and finally called time on his playing career in 2014.
Aasif Karim:
Hailing from the port town of Mombasa in Kenya, Aasif Karim was a long-standing captain of the national team. He led the country for 21 ODIs and won 6 of them. He was one of their best performers in the 2003 World Cup.
They lost against India but Karim impressed. He even won a Man of the match honor against the Australians in the same tournament.
