IPL 2016: Chris Gayle remarks to a female journalist have put him in serious trouble

Chris Gayle’s controversial remarks in an interview he gave to a female journalist in a British newspaper (The Times) recently has led to the Melbourne Renegades announcing that they will not offer him a fresh contract for next season’s Big Bash League (BBL). Gayle also faces a possible censure from English county club Somerset, for whom he’s slated to play soon. To add to his worries, the Jamaican’s latest antics may just put him in serious trouble in the Indian Premier League (IPL) too.

Gayle had told the journalist he has “A very, very big bat, the biggest in the wooooorld. You think you could lift it? You’d need two hands”. Under fire since then, the 36-year-old later defended himself by saying that the comments were made in jest and he was having a bit of fun.

Taking cognizance of the issue, IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla told TOI on Tuesday: “The players must behave. We expect the players to adhere to a certain kind of behaviour when the tournament is on. The players should maintain the sanctity of the league. These kind of statements are totally uncalled for in public domain. I will take up this issue with the president and the secretary of the BCCI.”
