IPL 2020: Which Player Is Likely To Take The Most No. Of Wickets?

Cricket LoungeBy Cricket LoungeUpdated:08/02/2023No Comments2 Mins Read

IPL 2020: With 26 wickets in 17 games, Imran Tahir was the leading wicket-taker in IPL 2019 and there is every reason the veteran leg spinner from South Africa might end up at the top of the pile again in the next edition of the IPL as well.

The reason why Tahir is so successful in T20 cricket is his ability to bowl with a flatter trajectory and still be able to turn the ball both ways.

Normally, the modern-day leg spinners, who bowl with a flatter trajectory, have an effective googly, but they can’t rip the stock leg spinner away from the right-handers.

The leggies who take it away from the right-handers are all loopy leggies and they can be countered if the batsman is a good user of his feet or has long levers.

But, Imran Tahir, because of the fact that he bowls flat and quick, keeps the batsmen in his crease most of the time and forces them to try and read the direction of the ball off the back-foot which induces false strokes on a consistent basis.

It was not only in the IPL this year where Tahir got a lot of wickets; he also achieved a tremendous amount of success in the other T20 leagues around the world.

The 40-year old was the second-highest wicket-taker in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) where he grabbed 16 poles off 9 games at an average of 12.31.

Tahir has so far taken the most number of wickets in the ongoing Mzansi Super League (MSL) too. He is topping the chart in the MSL with 17 wickets in 11 games averaging 14.23 per wicket.

Imran Tahir is ideally suited to the Indian conditions. He is a part of the CSK squad and plays all his home games at the M. A. Chidambaram stadium which almost always offers dry, spinning tracks.

Apart from Chidambaram, the likes of Wankhede Stadium and the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground also assist the spinners.

Keeping all the factors in mind, the odds are heavily stacked in the favor of Imran Tahir finishing as the leading wicket-taker in IPL 2020 again.
