IPL 2020: The Best Playing XI For Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings, now also known as the Daddy’s Army, is a team that has counted upon experience in the past two seasons. Even for IPL 2020, the Yellow Army didn’t tinker a lot with their recruits for the upcoming season. Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, CSK’s IPL 2020 squad shows much resemblance with their squad from last year.

The team released a mere five players before the auction and roped in players to mainly strengthen their bowling department. The inclusion of the likes of Sam Curran, Josh Hazlewood, and their most expensive buy – Piyush Chawla, was an indication of the concern showed by the franchise to address their bowling issues.

CSK, with all the experience of their players, can never be undermined before the start of the season, The team might be short on flair but possess enough campaigners who are much aware of the dynamics of T20 cricket.

Chennai Super Kings IPL 2020 squad: Narayan Jagadeesan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, KM Asif, Ravindra Jadeja, M Vijay, MS Dhoni, Josh Hazlewood, Kedar Jadhav, Harbhajan Singh, Karn Sharma, Piyush Chawla, Ambati Rayudu, Suresh Raina, Imran Tahir, Deepak Chahar, Faf du Plessis, Shardul Thakur, Mitchell Santner, Dwayne Bravo, Lungi Ngidi, Sam Curran, Monu Kumar, Shane Watson, Sai Kishore

Here’s a look at Chennai’s best first-choice playing XI for IPL 2020:

Openers: Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis:

Chennai struggled with their opening combination at the start of the season in 2019. Opening with Rayudu and Watson, CSK had much average opening stands in the early half of the edition before du Plessis replaced Rayudu at the top of the order.

The duo of Watson and du Plessis did a reasonable job despite Watson struggling for form. Du Plessis made a major difference and it would be assumed that CSK will want to continue with the same pair. Of late, Watson has also shown signs of great form with heavy runs scored in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

Middle-Order: Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni (C & WK):

Chennai’s real strength in batting lies in their middle-order. The experience of Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni of playing IPL in the last 12 years will come to help the team’s cause in pressure situations. Raina, who has been the most consistent batsman in IPL history, has delivered for the team in almost every season. The perpetual No.3 for CSK has scored runs at an SR nearing 140.

Rayudu’s form might be a point of concern for the franchise but they will hope that he arrives in the IPL with a liking to score runs. Dhoni, as usual, will be donning the finisher’s role along with the likes of Jadeja and Jadhav to follow. Though his batting prowess might have taken a massive dive in recent times, he still happens to be the rescue man in pressure situations.

All-rounders: Kedar Jadhav, Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja:

CSK will have the luxury of Jadhav, Dwayne Bravo, and Ravindra Jadeja as their best three all-rounders in the playing XI. Though Kedar and Jadeja haven’t produced enough numbers in the shortest format, the franchise has invested faith in their abilities to deliver with their all-round show.

DJ Bravo, who has been a constant for CSK in all these years in the IPL, doesn’t exhibit similar quality anymore in the T20 format. His declining prowess in the T20s is one of the major reasons why the franchise opted for Sam Curran in this year’s auction.

Bowlers: Piyush Chawla, Deepak Chahar, Lungi Ngidi:

The bowling department will feature a new recruit for CSK this season in Piyush Chawla. Chawla, who has bought for an auction price of ₹6.75 crores, will be a definite pick in the side. He will be aided by Deepak Chahar and Lungi Ngidi as the other two bowlers in the side.
