MI vs DC: Delhi Capitals crash out of the IPL 2022. Royal Challengers Bangalore seal their playoff spot. This was made possible by Mumbai Indians’ 5-wicket win in a thrilling encounter at the Wankhede on Saturday as they chased down the target of 160 with 5 balls to spare.
Asked to bat first, DC lost David Warner for just 5 and Mitchell Marsh for a duck, followed by wickets of Prithvi Shaw (24 runs off 23 balls) and Sarfaraz Khan, leaving themselves reeling at 50-4 inside 9 overs.
Skipper Rishabh Pant stepped up in the must-win game and steadied the partnership with Rovman Powell as both forged a partnership of 75 runs off 44 balls with the West Indian playing his aggressive game while Pant played the role of the supporter.
Pant had settled himself in nicely for a late overs assault, however, got out to a poor shot to Ramandeep Singh for 39 off 33 balls. Bumrah castled Powell (43 off 34) with a pinpoint yorker and these late wickets restricted DC to 159, which still looked defendable against a collapsible MI batting line-up and with the pitch assisting the bowlers.
Rohit Sharma had a poor conclusion to a disappointing season – dismissed for 2 off 13 balls. MI then managed a couple of fifty partnerships – between Ishan Kishan and Dewald Brevis, and Tilak Varma and Tim David to stretch the game, always remaining one step ahead.
The turning point of the match came when Shardul Thakur induced a thin edge of David when he hadn’t even scored a run yet. The umpire gave it not out but Pant, who even gestured he had heard something, surprisingly didn’t opt for the review.
David then hammered 34 runs off 11 balls, walloping 4 sixes and 2 fours, to bring the required rate to run-a-ball. Ramandeep Singh with his 13 off 6 balls ensured MI crossed the line without any more fuss.
Since RCB were also heavily involved in the game, and them sealing their playoff berth with DC’s loss, Twitter went wild with all sorts of memes and jokes and whatnot.
