RR vs LSG: A thumping 24-run victory over the Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday night at the Brabourne Stadium sees Rajasthan Royals move up to the second position in the points table and a step closer to the playoffs as they switch positions with LSG who now go down to third.
This margin of victory could also help RR not only if there’s a 16-point tie but also assist them in landing a top-two position which they could be jostling for with LSG; both the teams now have 16 points in 13 matches but RR have a slightly better net run rate.
It was a blessing in disguise for the Royals that their best batsman of the season, Jos Buttler, got out for just 2 runs because that demanded others to step up. And while nobody scored a fifty, contribution came from all others who got a chance to bat.
Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed 41 runs off 29 balls and along with skipper Sanju Samson (32 off 24 balls) made use of the powerplay restrictions; in a 21-run over from speedster Dushmantha Chameera, Jaiswal also smoked a 103-metre gigantic six.
After the two it was the Devdutt Padikkal show, the left-hander playing a sizzling knock of 39 runs from 18 balls followed by Riyan Parag’s 19 off 16 and James Neesham’s 12 off 12. And when at 152/6 it seemed that RR would score about 165, R Ashwin (10 of 7) and Trent Boult (17 off 9) propelled them to 178, which, given RR’s bowling attack and the ball gripping on the surface, was always going to be difficult for LSG.
Difficult it proved for Lucknow who never got going in the chase. Boult nipped out Quinton de Kock and Ayush Badoni off consecutive balls and then it was the big wicket of KL Rahul (10 off 19) that really left LSG reeling at 29/3.
Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya stopped the wicket flow and steadied the ship with their partnership of 65 runs in 46 balls but the asking rate kept rising only before both batters succumbed to the pressure.
Pandya and Hooda’s dismissal were followed by those of Holder and Chameera. And while Marcus Stoinis 27 in 17 balls only helped LSG mitigate the NRR damage.
