KKR vs GT: Gujarat Titans escaped a scare from Andre Russell as Alzarri Joseph defended 18 runs from the last over to defeat the Kolkata Knight Riders by 8 runs in a thrilling encounter at the DY Patil on Saturday.
This victory – sixth in seven matches – has kept the Titans firmly on the top position in the points table and are now inching closer to sealing a playoff berth. Knight Riders, on the other hand, have lost four consecutive matches are have 6 points in 8 games.
Captain Hardik Pandya, who was returning from an injury-forced rest, was the top scorer for GT. Coming in at number 3, after the early wicket of in-form Shubman Gill, Pandya motored the innings along with Saha before teeing off in tandem with David Miller. He finished at 67 runs from 49 balls setting up a platform for a big finish for others.
However, Andre Russell’s incredible 20th over – that saw 4 wickets – meant GT were restricted to 156, a par total.
KKR had a poor start as Mohammed Shami dismissed both openers, Sam Billings and Sunil Narine, before Nitish Rana and skipper Shreyas Iyer, too, walked back into the dressing room.
Rinku Singh and Venkatesh Iyer stopped the wicket-flow but only strolled the innings till the arrival of Russell, who straightway took on pacer Yash Dayal – after being given a reprieve caught off a no-ball – clattering the young pacer for a couple of maximums.
Russell lost a couple of partners at the other end but continued to tonk Ferguson and Shami; Umesh Yadav, too, got in the act and a couple of hits to and over the fence.
The match was then going to be decided in a West Indian battle – Joseph vs Russell. The batter slogged a six on the first ball but was bounced out by Joseph on the second with Ferguson taking a superb catch at fine leg. Joseph had no problems closing out the game against Umesh and Southee.
