The game between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals’ on Friday was marred by an ugly controversy as Rishabh Pant asked batters Rovmen Powell and Kuldeep Yadav to walk off the field over a no-ball decision. The incident took place in the final over of the chase after the on-field umpire decided against referring a no-ball decision to the third umpire.
Here’s what happened:
Well, the first 3 balls of the last over were smashed for 3 back to back sixes by Rovman Powell. The third ball however appeared to be above the waist of the batter but the umpires did not call it a no-ball.
The same didn’t go down well with the captain of Delhi Capitals – Rishabh Pant, who was angry with the call and wanted the players to return if the no-ball was not checked. Eventually, things got settled between both the teams but Powell couldn’t connect the remaining 3 balls and DC lost the game by 15 balls.
Following the controversy, Pant was seen signaling his batsmen to walk off, which would have resulted in Rajasthan winning the game. Not just this, a member of DC’s coaching staff, Pravin Amre also entered the playing area to have a chat with the officials.
A good match between both the teams ended with an ugly controversy. The video of the same has been going viral on social media.

Meanwhile, the controversy kickstarted a debate on social media, with several fans, cricketers, and experts, coming up with their own opinions on the matter. While several people felt that the umpires were wrong, on the other hand, there were many who slammed Rishabh Pant for the way he reacted.

Powell starting the last over with 3 sixes, Praveen Amre running out on the field, Rishabh Pant calling his batsman back, umpire not checking that no ball thing … Excellent entertainment, this is WWE level stuff, I was waiting for Vince McMahon to run out on the field too!

Shocking night. The umpiring has been worse than even gully-mohalla standard but Rishabh Pant had no business to suggest his batsmen to stage a walkout #DCvRR

Rishabh Pant, you’re wrong here champ. Sending someone out onto the field to try and change the umpires decision, right or wrong, is complete nonsense. #DCvRR

I stand with Rishabh Pant, it was a clear no ball, the umpires have gone extremely blind. I request the BCCI to give these umpires a proper training before asking them to officiate.#IPL2022 #DCvRR pic.twitter.com/4suQkCquFd

Blame Rishabh Pant for that, but also blame the umpires for being so rigid as to not even use the technology that they have at their disposal. I mean, as viewers, we deserve better. There’s time wasted on petty things and we sit through it. Surely this can be checked. #DCvRR

In the garb of rules, let’s not let this incident hide the soft underbelly of Indian cricket: poor umpiring standards. The @BCCI have let this situation because they kept mum when mediocre umpires were being fast tracked in IPL #DCvsRR #IPL #NoBall #Pant
