RCB vs RR: At 111/2 with one ball left in the 14th over, the Royal Challengers Bangalore looked set for a final total in excess of 170 against the Rajasthan Royals in the Qualifier 2, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
However, a collapse – not surprising with RCB the batting team – saw them finish with 157 in 20 overs.
Their two set batters Glenn Maxwell and Rajat Patidar got out in a space of 10 balls. The Australian, who had started like a race car, smashing 24 off 12 balls could consider himself a bit unlucky, holing out straight to the deep fine leg fielder, the lone man in that region as Obed McCoy dived forward and took a good catch.
Patidar continued his superb momentum from the previous – a thrilling maiden IPL century – and finished with 58 off 42 balls today, holding the RCB batting after the early wicket of Virat Kohli, who scored 7 off 8 balls and edged Prasidh Krishna. Patidar was caught brilliantly at the long-off boundary by Buttler, after failing to middle the carrom ball from Ashwin.
RCB were further dented, and more crucially, with the dismissals of Mahipal Lomror (8 off 10) and their best batsman this season, and arguably the best finisher of the tournament, Dinesh Karthik (6 off 7).
McCoy deceived Lomor into a false shot off his short ball, caught inside the circle, while DK was caught at long-on by Riyan Parag after toe-ending his slog off Prasidh Krishna’s length ball well outside the off-stump. Krishna yorked Wanindu Hasaranga handing the Sri Lankan for a golden duck before McCoy cleaned up Harshal Patel on the first ball of the last over.
RCB scored just 34 runs in the last five overs with just 2 sixes and 1 four coming off in the last 30 balls of their innings. This could well prove to be the loss factor in this crucial game.
RCB were mercilessly trolled on Twitter for their abject collapse:
