The Gujarat Titans have kick-started their title defense in IPL 2023 with a 5-wicket victory in a last-over thriller against the mighty Chennai Super Kings.
In the chase of the target of 179 runs, on a good pitch at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad, the Titans’ batters rallied around Shubman Gill‘s brilliant knock of 63 runs from 36 balls to seal the chase with 4 balls to spare, Rahul Tewatia, finishing the game with a 6 and 4, remaining unbeaten on 15 off 14 balls while Rashid Khan’s six and four to Deepak Chahar in the penultimate over had put GT within touching distance of the target.
CSK skipper MS Dhoni said his side was “another 15-20 runs short” and it was proven so by the GT batters.
CSK looked to finish near 200 when Ruturaj Gaikwad was going all guns blazing, timing the balls beautifully and hitting 9 sixes and 4 fours in his terrific knock of 92 runs off 50 balls, after losing Devon Conway early. However, other CSK batters couldn’t go along with Gaikwad’s pace, with the next best being 23 from Moeen Ali.
MS Dhoni, for whom the large crowd had assembled to see in what is likely to be his last IPL season as a player, hammered Josh Little for a six and four in the last over to give the fans some memories they could take with them.
In the chase, Saha and Gill were quick to get off the blocks with an opening stand of 37 runs in 3.5 overs before Saha was dismissed. Sai Sudharsan, who came in as the Impact Player for Kane Williamson who got injured while fielding, scored handy 22 runs while Pandya managed just 8, but Gill remained strong in his game, showing both class and power by smacking 6 fours and 3 sixes.
The match got to an interesting turn when Gill got out in the 15th over, leaving 41 to score from 30 balls. Tewatia, Vijay Shankar, and Rashid Khan took the charge and took their side home.
