England’s star all-rounder Sam Curran became the most expensive buy in the history of the Indian Premier League as Punjab Kings literally broke the bank and bought the services of the star all-rounder for INR 18.50 crore. Following an intense bidding war between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings, Sam Curran returned to the Punjab Kings for a staggering sum of 185 million Indian rupees ($2.23 million).
It was a big blow for Chennai Super Kings to let go of their star all-rounder, who recently impressed everyone with his brilliant performance in the T20 World Cup 2022. CSK was hampered by the lack of purse in the mega-auction 2022 when they roped in Deepak Chahar for INR 14 crores and the same happened this time around as well as they couldn’t go beyond a certain amount to get back their young all-rounder Sam Curran.
With the way how Curran performed in the international white-ball season and the T20 World Cup, where he was awarded the player of the tournament title with 13 wickets, he was expected to be paid heavily. He played a big part in England’s run to the trophy, emerging as a key bowler in the death overs and a useful wicket-taker for England. What made his performance in the T20 World Cup 2022, even more, special was the fact that the majority of his overs came either at the back of an innings or during the Powerplay.
Notably, Curran was picked up for INR 7.2 crore by Punjab Kings in the auctions ahead of the IPL 2019 however he was released ahead of the 2020 season of the IPL. He finally joined Chennai Super Kings for INR 5.5 crore in the 2020 edition of the IPL and was a part of the title-winning squad in 2021. Curran decided to skip the tournament in the subsequent edition.
Chennai Super Kings Shared An Emotional Farewell Tweet For Sam Curran
Meanwhile, as Punjab Kings roped in Curran at INR 18.5 crore, making him the most expensive player in the history of IPL, his former team Chennai Super Kings came up with an emotional tweet, bidding farewell to the star all-rounder.
In their tweet, CSK shared an image of Curran a kid (photoshopped), and wrote: “Tough luck, well played! Go well, Sam!”
