After the succesful completion of the 4-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, the focus has now shifted to the upcoming 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League. However, ahead of the much-awaited season, Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) has suffered a huge blow as their captain Shreyas Iyer has sustained a back injury and might be ruled out of the first phase of the tournament.
KKR Announced Their New Captain?
If Iyer is ruled out of the upcoming season, KKR will have a big task of appointing a new captain before the start of the season on March 31.
Meanwhile, fans on social media are busy speculating who might replace Iyer as KKR’s new captain. Recently, KKR via their official Instagram page uploaded a video of Rinku Singh in the nets where fans commented and to everyone’s surprise the IPL team responded to the comments by calling Rinku “our skipper”.
Yes, you read that right. The screenshot of the KKR’s comment calling out Rinku as their captain has been making rounds on the internet.

Talking about Rinku, the uncapped Indian player is being backed by the fans to replace Shreyas Iyer as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2023 season. However, it is highly unlikely that Rinku Singh will be named KKR’s captain to fill in Iyer’s shoes. It has to be noted that ever since Rinku made his debut in the year 2018, he hasn’t played an entire season in the IPL.
Last year, Rinku got only 7 matches to play, which was also his highest number of matches. So, it is very unlikely that the KKR management will give the captaincy responsibility to Rinku.
Meanwhile, Nitish Rana, Tim Southee and Shakib Al Hasan are the three favorite contenders to take over the captaincy if Iyer is ruled out of the IPL 2023 season because of the back injury.
