IPL 2023 Trading Window: 3 Biggest Trades In IPL Trading Window History

The IPL 2023 trading window will also be opened a month prior to the IPL 2023 auction slated for mid-December where franchises can trade players in and out of their squad.

The IPL trading window is a really exciting time for the fans before the auction, where some bold decisions have been made by the franchises in the past.

Over the years, there have been some masterstrokes made by the franchises in the trading window.

IPL 2023 Trading Window: Here are the 3 best trades made by a franchise in the IPL trading window history

Trent Boult – Mumbai Indians, 2020

Despite winning the 2019 IPL title, Mumbai Indians were in the hunt of improving their bowling attack, especially keeping in mind Lasith Malinga’s decline. So they traded in New Zealand seamer Trent Boult from Delhi Capitals. Boult only played 5 matches for DC in 2019 and picked only 5 wickets at an average of 32, so DC didn’t mind trading Boult away, the player receiving a higher salary of 3.2 crore than 2.2 at DC.

What seemed to be a debatable move by MI turned into a history-defining decision as Trent Boult emerged as the best powerplay bowler in IPL 2022, and overall took 25 wickets that season, including a three-for in the final – against whom? Delhi Capitals!

Shikhar Dhawan – Delhi Capitals, 2019

In one of the most shocking moves, Sunrisers Hyderabad led go off senior opener Shikhar Dhawan to Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2019 IPL auction. This was a 3-to-1 trade with SRH receiving Shankar, Shahbaz Nadeem, and Abhishek Sharma for Dhawan. At SRH from 2013 to 2018, Dhawan had been a consistent run-scorer, helping the side to the title in 2016 and to the final in 2018, however, SRH still traded him to DC.

At Delhi, Dhawan became a beast in the IPL – he ransacked 521, 618 and 587 runs in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons respectively. DC reached their first-ever final in 2020 and finished in the top four in the other two seasons largely thanks to Dhawan’s superb form.

Quinton de Kock – Mumbai Indians, 2019

As shrewd Mumbai Indians have been on the auction table, they have been smart to acquire good players in the trading window too. For instance, Quinton de Kock. The South African opener had had a poor IPL 2018 season with RCB – who, indeed, didn’t really use the left-hander well – as he scored only 201 runs that year with one fifty.

So RCB let him go as MI came calling for the dynamic Protea opener who was making a name for himself at that point. That trade came to fruition soon as de Kock amassed 529 runs in IPL 2019, playing a significant role at the top of the other helping MI clinch their fourth IPL title. Quinton de Kock continued his good form and plundered 503 runs the next season in another title win for MI.
