IPL 2024: Who Will Be The Best Opening Pair This Season

Even though there are two Test series – both part of the WTC 2023/25 cycle – going on right now, fans are talking about the IPL 2024 season.

The IPL 2024 will be the 16th edition of the tournament which is the biggest T20 league in the world and boasts of most of the marquee T20 players.

The IPL 2024 will get underway on March 22 with the defending champions, MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings, hosting Faf du Plessis’ RCB team at the iconic Chepauk. The BCCI has released the schedule of only the first 21 matches and will release the rest of the schedule after the Indian Election Commission announces the dates of the general elections slated for April-May.

A few teams have some of the strongest opening pairs ever seen in T20 cricket, while a few could do better with the combination and the stature of their openers.

There is the highly experienced RCB opening duo of Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis. Then there is the pair of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan who have been together at MI since 2018. The Delhi Capitals have the dynamic, powerhouse opening combination of David Warner and Prithvi Shaw.

But for former India opener Aakash Chopra, it is Rajasthan Royals’ opening duo of Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal that is the most destructive and the best, more so considering the form of the young left-hander in the past year, across formats. Chopra strongly feels that Yashasvi Jaiswal could have his second consecutive 600-run IPL season; the left-hander scored 625 runs last season at a terrific strike rate of 163.

“I feel Rajasthan’s opening combination of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler is amazing. It could actually be ranked No. 1. I am saying that firstly because of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s current form. It means his 600-plus IPL season is almost loading,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
