IPL 2025: 2 Areas Where CSK Has A Stronger Team Than In 2024

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have consistently been one of the IPL’s most successful teams, thanks to their strategic team composition and the legendary leadership of MS Dhoni. However, even for a team with such a legacy, evolution is key. For the IPL 2025 season, CSK has made strategic enhancements to their squad, addressing areas where they were previously less dominant. Here’s a detailed look at two significant improvements over the 2024 team.

1. CSK’s Spin Department:

In IPL 2024, CSK’s spin attack was primarily composed of all-rounders like Ravindra Jadeja, Mitchell Santner, and Moeen Ali, which meant they relied on part-time spinners rather than specialists. This approach sometimes lacked the depth and variety needed to control games, especially on the spin-friendly tracks of Chepauk.

For IPL 2025, CSK has significantly bolstered their spin department with the inclusion of Ravichandran Ashwin and Noor Ahmad. Ashwin, returning to his former team after years, brings not just experience but also a wealth of variations and the ability to read the game like few others. His expertise in both match situations and home conditions could be pivotal. Alongside him, Noor Ahmad, the young Afghan left-arm wrist-spinner, adds an element of mystery and guile to the attack. His ability to bowl googlies and wrong’uns at a good pace can disrupt even the most settled batsmen. Together, they form a formidable spin duo that can not only take wickets but also manage the run rate effectively, offering CSK a much more robust spin bowling option than before.

2. Good Fast Bowling Options:

CSK’s pace attack in 2024 was functional but lacked the variety and depth to challenge batsmen consistently across different phases of the game. The 2025 squad, however, showcases a marked improvement in this aspect. With Matheesha Pathirana leading the charge, known for his slingy action and death-over prowess, CSK has a specialist in the final overs. His presence alone has added a new dimension to their bowling strategy.

Complementing Pathirana, Khaleel Ahmed brings in swing early in the innings, providing breakthroughs when the ball is new. Nathan Ellis, known for his ability to bowl at different phases of the game with both pace and variations, adds further depth. And then there’s Sam Curran, an all-rounder whose seam bowling can be deceptive, particularly in the middle overs or as an impact player. This quartet provides CSK with a versatile pace attack that can adapt to various conditions and match situations, significantly strengthening what was previously a weaker link in their armor.

CSK’s strategic acquisitions for IPL 2025 have notably enhanced their prospects. The spin department, now led by Ashwin and Ahmad, offers a new level of control and wicket-taking ability, while the pace attack has been transformed into a dynamic and varied unit. These changes not only reflect CSK’s readiness to adapt but also their commitment to maintaining their status as perennial contenders in the IPL. With these improvements, CSK is poised to leverage their strengths, potentially leading them to another successful campaign in the quest for yet another IPL title.
