IPL Auction 2020: 3 Most Confusing Picks Of The Season

The IPL 2020 auction saw a number of players change their jerseys for a new one, while a number of them also went back to their former employees to grace their respective sides. The likes of Nathan Coulter Nile and Glenn Maxwell were picked by their former teams, Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab respectively while former Kolkata Knight Riders batsman Chris Lynn, who was released by his former employers, was picked by the Indians to strengthen their batting lineup.

There were, however, a few decisions as well, which were rather surprising. A few of the franchises made such decisions to pick players who have been released by their former employers after the 2019 season on the basis of their poor form. Here we are categorizing three such decisions, which could prove to be utter blunders for the respective franchises once the tournament starts.

  • Piyush Chawla (Picked by CSK for Rs. 6.75 Crores)

The former KKR leg spinner has been a part of two IPL winning campaigns in the past but was more of a backup option for the franchise, owned by the King of Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan, in recent times. He was released by them at the end of the last term, which was a rather unproductive one for them in terms of player performances as well as results. However, one of the most successful franchises in the sphere of IPL, Chennai Super Kings, went in full throttle for his signature and it came to a surprise for many when the southpaw was picked by the four times IPL winning side for a staggering sum of Rs. 6.75 Crores in the IPL 2020 auction.

The Yellow brigade already has a number of spinning options at their disposal, including the likes of Imran Tahir and Karn Sharma, both of whom are leg spinners. The selection of Chawla as a third leg spinner is sure to raise a few eyebrows, more so because of the lack of game time, the leggie has had in the last term, which could see this decision backfire during the tournament.

  • Pravin Tambe (Picked by KKR for Rs. 20 Lakhs)

The Knight Riders, who seem to rely on young blood most of the time, went for the 48-year-old off-spinner in the IPL 2020 auction 2020, which was rather strange. The former Rajasthan Royals player has been one of the surprise packages in quite a few seasons and had taken a hat-trick against KKR in the 2014 edition of the IPL but it is very hard to see him become a part of the first team on a regular basis for the two times IPL champions. In fact, with the off-spinner being on the wrong side of the forties, it can turn out to be a disastrous decision for his current employers to expect a lot of him during the tournament.

  • Alex Carey (Picked by Delhi Capitals for Rs. 2.4 Crores)

When you have a star wicketkeeper-batsman like Rishabh Pant in your ranks, why would you go for an overseas wicketkeeper-batsman, who has got zero experience in IPL? Well, Delhi Capitals brought in the Australian ace Alex Carey, possibly as a backup for the Indian southpaw, which seemed to be a little strange. It is understandable that they were looking to strengthen their side for the forthcoming tournament but picking a player with zero experience in IPL could turn out to be a decision that can backfire for the Capitals. Also, Pant is expected to play most of the matches in the IPL for Delhi which means that Carey will have to spend his time in the dugout rather than on the pitch as well.
