IPL Governing Council Will Hurt China Where It Hurts The Most

In one of the worst incidents in the last many decades as 20 Indian soldiers,  including a Colonel, got martyred in a violent clash between the Indian army and the Chinese Troops in Galwan Valley. Following the clash between the two countries, there has been massive outrage in India as people are demanding to ban the use of all Chinese products in the country.

Besides this, social media is already flooded with the posts of fans asking BCCI to remove Vivo, a Chinese phone manufacturer, as the title sponsor of the league.

After receiving criticism, the Governing Council of the Indian Premier League announced that they have called a meeting next week to review IPL’s various sponsorship deals in the wake of the ongoing India-China border skirmish. Indian Premier League via their official twitter account confirmed the news about the same. The tweet read:

“Taking note of the border skirmish that resulted in the martyrdom of our brave jawans, the IPL Governing Council has convened a meeting next week to review IPL’s various sponsorship deals,”

If sources are to be believed than IPL’s governing body might get other sponsor options like Paytm, Dream XI and more. A BCCI source said:

“It’s true that there has been additional funding in some of the IPL central sponsors, as part of their expansion plans, that comes from China. So, all of this will come up for discussion in the meet,”

It was in December last year when Vivo had retained the title sponsorship rights for the IPL for a whopping Rs 2,199 crore over a period of five years. Treasurer Arun Dhumal recently defended Vivo and said:

“BCCI has created an infrastructure of thousands of crores in the country. If a Chinese company is earning money from the Indian consumer and paying it to the BCCI, which in turn is giving a 40 per cent tax to the government, then I believe we are helping the Indian cause,”

He added:

“If there is a directive from the government that no Chinese product or services will be allowed in the country, BCCI will be happy to adhere to it. But in the absence of any such order and if that money is being used in India, and for the betterment of Indian cricket, then I don’t see any issue with it.”
