GT vs LSG: With an emphatic, massive 62-run victory over the Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday evening in Pune, Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans become the first team in the IPL 2022 to qualify for the playoffs.
The Titans now have 18 points in 12 matches and they take back the numero uno spot in the points table, pushing down KL Rahul’s team to number second who have 16 points in 12 matches.
Shubman Gill was GT’s hero with the bat, anchoring through the entire innings with his 63-run unbeaten knock from 49 balls which comprised 7 fours but no six. What may have seemed a slow knock at one point, proved to be crucial for the Titans as the opener held the innings together while others around him mostly struggled for timing and boundaries.
Wriddhiman Saha, Hardik Pandya, and David Miller all batted at a strike rate of less than 110 for a considerable amount of balls before Rahul Tewatia struck four boundaries to take the total to a par score of 144.
For LSG, overseas seamers Dushmantha Chameera and Jason Holder proved to be expensive in this low-scorer. Lucknow also got off to a poor start losing their top two batters in the tournament, KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock by Mohammed Shami and Yash Dayal, inside the powerplay.
Once the Gujarat bowlers got on top of the LSG batting order by knocking around their two openers, there was no relief from any end. Gujarat ran through the LSG batting line-up like a hot knife through butter and bowled them out for 82.
Only three LSG batters could reach double figures – and one of which was Avesh Khan who struck a couple of sixes towards the end. Rashid Khan registered his best bowling figures in the IPL of 4/24. Shubman Gill was named the Man of the Match.
Memes galore as Hardik Pandya’s team, coached by Ashish Nehra, rumbled into the playoffs after not many would have given them a chance at the start of the tournament.
