The Arrival of Dewald Brevis: IPL has always had the reputation for harnessing raw talents and bringing them to the limelight, underlining the sheer brilliance that they come to the fore with and showcasing to the world why they are so special.
IPL 2022 has been no exception whatsoever to this established belief as a handful of names are already being discussed as being the hot shots of the near future. One such name is South African wunderkind, Dewald Brevis.
Just ahead of the IPL auction, he made the echoes for all the right reasons as he grabbed the limelight with a handful of blistering knocks in the U19 World Cup, belting his contemporaries at will. Despite South Africa’s forgettable outing in the 2022 U19 World Cup, it was Brevis’ bedazzling brilliance with the blade that left the world starstruck.
Dewald Brevis has so far played 9 ODIs for the South African youth team, racking up 530 runs at a sturdy average of 58.88. He is a free-flowing stroke player as he can easily stitch his strikes and his sense of timing is impeccable.
Just after the U19 World Cup ended, he was called up for the senior side of the Titans and he surprised the world with a handful of incredible knocks that already had the hammer in the IPL auctions going high enough for Dewald Brevis. His knocks of 23, 46*, 26 and 38 for the Titans were already making the noise for all the right reasons.
Dewald Brevis made his IPL debut on the 6th of April for the Mumbai Indians against KKR and despite his side’s slump, he played a fine knock of 29 that promised better outings to come. Despite failing against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, it was the Punjab Kings who witnessed Baby AB unfold at his majestic best as he set the field on fire with some electric fielding and then came down upon the Kings in the most menacing ways one can.
Dewald Brevis is a creator of effortless brilliance, putting those turnstile wrists to the best effect and his hand-eye coordination is just too stupendous to refuse. He also has aquiline reflexes that help him in getting into a stroke too early, making it easier to be executed perfectly.
Well, does that mean he is going to be Mumbai’s saviour? The answer is a plain bold “NO”. He is young and has a lot to learn. It is very promising to see him excel at such a tender age. He can be an absolute beast in the forthcoming days and believe it or not, he does possess the capacity of being the next Abraham Benjamin de Villiers. However, everything has a time and it is still not the right time for Dewald.
With time, he will simply go from strength to strength and if Mumbai can hold onto this youngster, he may be their next best bet to lead the upcoming generations. For now, let us all be content with the excellent aspiring youngster that he is. Pressure will make it a lot more difficult for him and a cricketer of his caliber deserves a lot more.
