Rohit Sharma has captained the Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles while MS Dhoni has led Chennai Super Kings to the glory four times. Both of them have made significant contributions as skippers – in the field and with the bat – to their team’s success.

However, it is former Royal Challengers Bangalore Virat Kohli who has scored the most IPL runs while leading a team. Although Kohli couldn’t deliver an IPL title for RCB fans- they came close in 2016 but lost the final to SRH – he has led from the front with his bat doing the talking mostly.

Kohli currently is the leading run-scorer in the IPL history, having amassed 6283 runs in 207 games. As a captain as well, Kohli has scored the most amount of runs in the competition: in 140 matches as RCB’s skipper, Kohli has recorded 4881 runs; all of his 5 centuries in the IPL came as RCB’s skipper. The right-hander relinquished his captaincy duties last season as RCB failed to clinch their maiden title once again.

Second on this list is MS Dhoni, who has captained CSK and Rising Pune Supergiant in a record 204 IPL games. In those matches, Dhoni has registered 4456 runs with his willow, regularly finishing off games.

Gautam Gambhir, the former Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals skipper, who led the two franchises in 129 matches, has scored 3518 runs as leader of the teams. Gambhir delivered two IPL titles for KKR, the only two the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise have won so far.

Former Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner marched his side to the 2016 IPL title in stunning fashion defeating RCB at its home ground. Warner has captained in 69 IPL games, scoring 2840 runs in those.

Following two names in this list are two legends of the game: 1900 runs for Adam Gilchrist as skipper of Deccan Chargers and Kings XI Punjab; 1723 runs by Sachin Tendulkar as Mumbai Indians’ captain.
