Irfan Pathan Defined Virat Kohli’s Legacy In The Most Apt Way

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan wrote a heartwarming note hailing Virat Kohli‘s legacy as a Test captain after the latter announced that he is stepping down as India’s Test skipper on Saturday.

Kohli made a shocking, unanticipated decision about his future. Just a day after India had lost the Test series in South Africa, the skipper decided to call it quits as the leader in the longest format.

Kohli had already relinquished his T20I captaincy at the end of the T20 World Cup, which he had announced before the tournament. Later, the BCCI decided to strip Kohli of as the ODI captain and appointed Rohit Sharma as the new white-ball captain. The fire of Kohli’s tussle with the board had not died down, in fact with this sudden call after a series loss it will only gain weight.

As Test skippers, Dhoni (27 wins from 60 matches) and Ganguly (21 wins out of 49) are a distance away from Kohli, under whom India rose to No.1 ICC rank, registered series wins in Australia, lead England by 2-1 in the unfinished away series, and reached the final of the inaugural World Test Championship.

The number of overseas victories – in West Indies, South Africa, Australia, England – were possible because Kohli, along with Ravi Shastri and Bharat Arun, created an unprecedented fast bowling cartel in Indian cricket.

Irfan Pathan reflected on this “impact” that Kohli had had during his captaincy Tenure in red-ball cricket.

Taking to Twitter, Pathan wrote: Whenever the talk of Indian cricket captains will arise in test cricket @imVkohli ‘s name will be up there, not only for results but the kind of impact he had as a captain. Thank you #ViratKohli”.

Kohli, sitting on 99 Tests, is expected to play his 100th Test in the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma, the ODI and T20I captain, is a strong contender to be appointed as the new Test captain as well.
