BREAKING: Jasprit Bumrah Ruled Out Of T20 World Cup 2022 With Back Fracture

India’s T20 World Cup chances have taken a big hit as spearhead fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been reportedly ruled out of the tournament that will kick off on October 16 in Australia.

Bumrah had earlier missed the Asia Cup 2022 – where India failed to reach the final – due to a back injury. He missed two months of action and had marked his return during the recent Australia series. In two T20I against the Aussies, Bumrah returned with figures of 1/23 (2 overs) and 0/50 (4 overs) and didn’t look in any discomfort.

However, soon after that he was rested from the first T20I against South Africa on Wednesday. Skipper Rohit Sharma, at the toss, said that Bumrah had a niggle, while soon after, a BCCI statement revealed that Bumrah had complained of back pain while training on Tuesday, and hence was ruled out of the first T20I vs the Protea.

Now, on Thursday, with less than 10 days to go for Team India’s departure for Australia, PTI have reported that Bumrah has been ruled out of the entire T20 World Cup 2022 due to a “serious back stress fracture” that will require “4-6 months” to recover.

“Breaking News: Jasprit Bumrah is out of World T20 with a serious back stress fracture injury. No surgery reqd but out for 4-6 months as per sources. He didn’t travel with team to Trivandrum,” tweeted PTI’s renowned journalist Kushan Sarkar on Thursday afternoon.

Mohammed Shami likely to replace Jasprit Bumrah in the T20 World Cup squad

The ruling out of Bumrah from the T20 World Cup couldn’t have come at a worse time. India’s death bowling attack had already been in a concerning state with expensive overs from Bhuvneshwar, Harshal and Arshdeep in the Asia Cup, against Australia and South Africa.

This could well mean that either Mohammed Shami or Deepak Chahar, both of whom are in the reserves for the T20 World Cup, will be promoted to the 15-man squad. While Shami brings vast experience, he hasn’t played a single T20I since last year’s T20 World Cup in the UAE. Deepak Chahar, who’d also add batting depth, however, is predominantly a new ball bowler and unlikely to play in the XI along with Bhuvneshwar. It clearly means that Harshal and Arshdeep both will start in the XI for India at the T20 World Cup.
