The Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jay Shah, has officially announced that Rohit Sharma will captain the Indian National Cricket Team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, with Rahul Dravid serving as the team’s head coach.
Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid last year, the Indian cricket team reached the finals of three major tournaments: the Asia Cup 2023, the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23, and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

However, despite their efforts, they were only able to win one trophy, which was the Asia Cup. They faced disappointing losses in the finals of the other two competitions. Notably, the Pat Cummins-led Australia National Cricket Team performed better on those occasions, defeating Rohit Sharma & Co. in the finals of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 and the ICC World Test Championship Final, breaking the hearts of billions of Indian fans.
Under Rohit’s leadership, India performed exceptionally well in the 2023 World Cup held at home, defeating all opposing teams convincingly. They reached the final as undefeated and were considered favorites to win, aiming to end India’s ICC trophy drought. However, their dream of winning the World Cup was not realized as they fell short in the final.
Rohit Sharma will have another chance to lead India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to take place in June in the USA and West Indies, aiming to secure an ICC trophy for the team.
In Rajkot on Wednesday, Jay Shah declared Rohit as the captain for the T20 World Cup 2024. Despite rumors suggesting Hardik Pandya might lead the team, Shah confirmed they were untrue. He also assured fans that the Indian team would win the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy in the West Indies. He said:
“In 2023 (final) at Ahmedabad, even though we did not win the World Cup after 10 straight wins, we won hearts. I want to promise you that in 2024 (T20 World Cup) in Barbados (venue for the final), under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, ham Bharat ka jhanda gaadenge (we will hoist the Indian flag),”
Shah also mentioned that Rahul Dravid, who received an extension after the World Cup 2023, will continue as the team’s head coach. Additionally, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya will act as Rohit’s deputy in the T20 World Cup 2024. He said:
“Rahul Dravid to be India coach during T20 World Cup, Hardik Pandya will be Rohit Sharma’s deputy,”
