Rohit Sharma is under scrutiny for not being able to score in the ODI series. This tour has been a nightmare for him and while Dhawan and Kohli have scored runs in plenty, Rohit Sharma’s highest score in the series is just 20. He now has the poorest average for an Indian batsman abroad. Rohit Sharma has had a poor run of form and has scored only 40 runs from 4 ODIs.

Kepler Wessel, one of the former South African legends of the game explains why Rohit Sharma has failed miserably in South Africa. Here is what Kepler said in an interview with TOI
“He will always struggle to score runs in SA because of his footwork. He plants his front foot across to the off-side and in SA, the pitches always seam and bounce a bit. This is the reason that he averages around 10 there. He’ll always struggle there because of his technique.
It doesn’t affect him in India and even in Australia, because the ball doesn’t seam there, it just bounces, but when you have seam and bounce, with that technique, he’s got a problem.”
KEPLER WESSEL TALKS ABOUT SA’s STRUGGLE AGAINST SPINNERS
Barring the fourth ODI, South African batsman have been in troubled waters because of the young spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. The Indian spinners have had the upper hand over the South African batsman. The batting line up has also been affected largely by injury woes.

Here is what Kepler Wessel said about South Africa’s struggle

“I’m a little bit surprised to see them struggle to the degree that they have. Then also, when you take out all their entire top batsmen (due to injuries), with the exception of Hashim Amla, and expose all their inexperienced players, I suppose that’s going to happen, but I have been a bit surprised that they have struggled as badly as they have.
They are particularly struggling to play the wrist spin and the Chinaman. They are facing difficulty picking the ball which turns away from the right angle, that’s the one they are really struggling with.”
