Senior India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the latest entrant in the 500 Test wickets club in the ongoing home series against England. R Ashwin is the 9th player to snap 500 Test wickets in his career.

Among the active players, England pacer James Anderson and Nathan Lyon are in this elite club, and both ahead of Ashwin. Ashwin’s average of 23.88 is the third-best among the 9 bowlers with 500 Test wickets.

Leading the list is the legendary pair of spinners – Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan and Australia’s Shane Warne with 800 and 708 Test wickets respectively. The England seam-bowling pair of James Anderson and Stuart Broad occupy the third and fifth spots respectively with Indian legend Anil Kumble in between them.

Glenn McGrath, who is hailed by many as the greatest pacer of all time, has 563 Test wickets at an average of 21.64 – McGrath’s average is the best among the bowlers with 500 Test scalps.
