Former South Africa cricket team skipper Faf du Plessis believes that Indian cricketers are still ‘heartbroken’ after their loss in the Cricket World Cup 2023 final, comparing it to the feeling of ‘breaking up with a girlfriend’.
In their first World Cup final since 2011, India entered as the strong favorites to win the title decider. Despite winning ten consecutive matches in the competition, India faced defeat against Australia in the championship match. Australia dominated the highly-favored hosts, securing a six-wicket victory and claiming their record-extending sixth World Cup title. Led by Pat Cummins, the Australian side restricted India to a modest total of 240 and successfully chased it down in 43 overs.
Although most players were rested for the T20I series against Australia, they are expected to return for the upcoming tour of South Africa. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Du Plessis discussed the challenges the players might encounter in the upcoming T20I series.
Faf Du Plessis On India’s Cricket World Cup 2023 Heartbreak

Faf du Plessis mentioned that it won’t be an easy task for the players to make a comeback after the loss in the World Cup final. Speaking about the same, Faf said:
“That is a big challenge. I remember going through a similar experience as a cricketer when we went through the highs and lows of the 2015 World Cup. The heartache that you have to deal with takes a bit of time and it is a bit like breaking up with a girlfriend.
“You cannot just get over it straight away. India were so amazing in the way they played in this World Cup. They were unbelievable the way they went about their business. They will be feeling in a similar way and they will be heartbroken. That was their World Cup to win. That will take a bit of time and time heals everything,” Faf du Plessis told NDTV.
He added: “Your first series back feels like you are in the middle of nowhere. Obviously there are so quality players there and some experience players who I am sure will help manage the young guys well,”
