Mark Taylor Takes A Dig At Jonny Bairstow For His Wicket-Keeping

Mark Taylor Takes A Dig At Jonny Bairstow For His Wicket-Keeping: Commencing with the Ashes, Jonny Bairstow’s handling issues have come to the fore. The English wicketkeeper’s glovework in the ongoing series against Australia has raised eyebrows. On the third day of the Headingley Test, he fumbled a catch that could have been routine, putting the spotlight on him once again. However, local lad Harry Brook swooped in, saving Bairstow from further embarrassment with a stellar catch.

Bairstow was seemingly rooted in uncertainty, as his indecisiveness nearly allowed Australia’s Mitchell Starc a second chance. In the ongoing Ashes series, the wicketkeeper-batsman has had a rocky run behind the stumps, dropping several chances, raising serious questions about his place ahead of specialist wicketkeeper Ben Foakes.

Notably, Bairstow was at the heart of the ‘spirit of cricket’ controversy following his contentious dismissal at Lord’s. He nearly added another error to his list when Starc skied a pull shot. Brook saved the day with a superb dive, but Bairstow’s hesitation didn’t go unnoticed by commentators.

“There was real confusion for a minute because Bairstow looked at Brook. Brook looked at Bairstow. Well done Harry Brook there. I reckon that was Jonny Bairstow’s catch. Particularly without the gloves and with the helmet on. That’s tough for him going backwards. Yes or no. That was definitely the keeper’s catch. Gee Brook did well,” Former Australian Test Captain Mark Taylor offered his analysis on Sky Sports.

Bairstow’s struggles with the gloves have been highlighted throughout the Ashes series. While his batting skills are invaluable, his keeping prowess, or lack thereof, has become a sticking point. The English selectors will have a challenging decision to make as they weigh Bairstow’s contributions to the team against his evident shortcomings. The player himself will be eager to bounce back and silence his critics. Only time will tell if Bairstow can rise to the occasion and reclaim his reputation as a reliable wicketkeeper-batsman for England.
