Michael Clarke Backs Steve Smith As A Test Opener

David Warner, the former Australian opener, has made his impact evident in Test cricket with his aggressive and entertaining style. Known for his explosive batting, Warner has redefined the role of an opener, bringing a fearless approach to the longest format of the game. His ability to dominate opposition bowlers from the outset puts immense pressure on the opposition. Warner’s remarkable consistency and knack for converting starts into big scores make him a pivotal asset for Australia. Beyond his prolific run-scoring, Warner’s energy in the field and leadership qualities contribute to the team’s overall dynamism. In essence, Warner’s impact as a Test opener extends far beyond individual statistics, influencing the very fabric of Australia’s batting ethos. However, after the third test vs Pakistan at the SCG, Warner retired from testa and ODI cricket. Now, the opening spot for test cricket is open. The biggest question is: Who will open with Usman Khawaja in tests?

Steve Smith has made his intentions clear to grab a chance to open the batting. He earlier said: “I’m actually happy to go up the top,” Smith said. “I’m pretty keen if that’s what they want to do. I’m sure the selectors and Ron [Andrew McDonald] and Patty [Cummins] will have a chat after this game but yeah, I’m certainly interested for sure.”

Steve Smith, the epitome of modern-day batting genius, has crafted an extraordinary legacy in Test cricket. Renowned for his unorthodox yet highly effective technique, Smith consistently defies conventional norms to accumulate runs prolifically. His unmatched ability to read bowlers, coupled with an insatiable hunger for big scores, has elevated him to the ranks of cricketing legends. Smith’s resilience, exemplified by his comeback from a suspension, has added layers to his narrative. Beyond the runs, his astute captaincy and impactful fielding contribute to his enduring impact on the game. Steve Smith’s legacy in Tests stands as a testament to unparalleled skill, adaptability, and sheer cricketing brilliance. He currently bats at number 4 and has amassed 9514 runs in 187 test innings with an average of 58 and 32 centuries in tests. He is certainly an all-time great when it comes to tests.

Michael Clarke Backs Steve Smith As A Test Opener

In this recent statement, Michael Clarke, the former Australian cricket captain, is expressing his belief in Steven Smith’s potential as a Test opener. Clarke predicts that within a year, Smith will ascend to the top spot among Test openers globally. The reference to breaking Brian Lara’s 400-run record implies Clarke’s confidence in Smith’s ability to not only excel but potentially set new milestones in Test cricket. This statement showcases Clarke’s high regard for Smith’s batting prowess and suggests that Smith has the capability to achieve significant feats, including surpassing legendary records in the format.

“I’ll tell you now about Steve Smith. If he wants to open the batting and they give him the chance, he will be the No. 1 Test opener within 12 months. He is that good a player. He is technically good enough, he lets the ball go well, he’s got a great eye, he’s got beautiful hands. Yes, he might nick the occasional one, he might get LBW but tell me someone that doesn’t. He is that good a player, and maybe it is the challenge he is looking for,” the former Australia captain.

“Smith doesn’t want to wait. He doesn’t want Warner or Khawaja to make a hundred, or Marnus to make a double hundred. He wants to make a double hundred. So if he open the batting, he will be the best opener within 12 months and the other thing, don’t be surprised if he breaks Brian Lara’s 400 record. Because he is that good and he’s got the whole day,” said Clarke.
