Michael Clarke Wants A Huge Change In The Australian Batting Order: The Ashes 2023 has been a rollercoaster ride for all, especially for the Australian cricket team. Former Australia captain, Michael Clarke, in a recent interview with Sky Sports Cricket, reflected on Australia’s current predicament and suggested a massive shake-up to the visitors’ batting lineup for the upcoming fourth Ashes Test.
One of the key figures under scrutiny is veteran opening batter, David Warner. Despite a promising start to the Ashes series, Warner has seen a decline in his performance, raising concerns over his role in the team. He began strongly with 45 runs at Edgbaston, followed by a commendable fifty at Lord’s. However, his performance dipped dramatically during the three-wicket loss to England at Headingley, where he managed a meagre five runs in total.
Warner’s struggles against England’s Stuart Broad have been a prominent feature in this Ashes series. Broad has consistently managed to get the better of Warner, bringing back the old worries about Warner’s efficacy at the top of the order. Australian skipper Pat Cummins has hinted at the possibility of benching Warner for the fourth Test, given his recent run of low scores.
Clarke, in his analysis, pointed out the pressing issue with the opening slot. He said, “The No.1 issue is you’ve stuck with Warner, given him every opportunity, and (Stuart) Broad’s still got his number. Is it time? If it’s time, I wouldn’t even be thinking about who opens the batting because you’ve got options.”
Michael Clarke wants changes in the Australian batting order for the fourth test in Ashes 2023

Clarke’s proposed solution involves a radical change in the batting order, even suggesting a makeshift opener. He elaborated on his proposal saying, “I reckon Mitch Marsh is in form. If he had to do it, he could do it. Alex Carey probably won’t because he’s got to keep, but Travis Head could do it. Marnus Labuschagne isn’t making as many runs as he should at No.3. He could open, Smithy could go to No.3 and Head to No.4 (with Marsh and Green No.5 and No.6).”
Clarke’s proposed batting order rearrangement highlights the potential of other players stepping up to fill the void, particularly Mitch Marsh and Travis Head. It also presents an opportunity for Marnus Labuschagne to shine at the top of the order.
As Australia prepare for the fourth Ashes Test, Clarke’s analysis provides a fresh perspective on their approach. With the idea of benching Warner and shuffling the batting order, Australia has a lot to consider. Clarke’s strategic shake-up may be the change Australia need to turn their fortunes around in the Ashes 2023.
