AB de Villiers thinks it’s not a good idea for MS Dhoni to stop being the captain of Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni surprised everyone in the cricketing world by giving up the captaincy just one day before IPL 2024 started.
On Thursday, March 21, CSK announced that MS Dhoni has stopped being the captain and Ruturaj Gaikwad will take over. Dhoni is one of the most successful captains in IPL history. CSK won five IPL titles and made it to the final ten times under his leadership.
AB de Villiers’ Honest Verdict On MS Dhoni Giving Up His Captaincy

They only missed the playoffs twice in 14 seasons with Dhoni as captain. He also led them to two titles in the Champions League T20. Ruturaj has a big responsibility as Dhoni’s replacement. We’ll have to wait and see how Ruturaj does as captain. AB de Villiers thinks Dhoni’s decision to step down is a big mistake. AB said:
“I think it’s a huge mistake. To me, MS Dhoni is five guys in the team as captain. Will that work together? I am not sure. We will have to wait and see. I do think it’s a mistake. What happened last time is similar. I feel CSK’s all about MS Dhoni’s leadership. And his captaincy will be a mistake,”
In 2022, MS Dhoni also stepped down as captain just before the tournament began. Ravindra Jadeja, an allrounder from India, took over as the captain of the Chennai-based team on that occasion.
However, this decision didn’t work out well for CSK as they struggled under Jadeja’s leadership. The season was also marked by a big controversy when Jadeja gave up the captaincy after just eight games and left the tournament midway. MS Dhoni had to step back in as the captain.
CSK, who were the defending champions at the beginning of the season, ended up finishing in ninth place out of ten teams. They only managed to win four out of their 14 league games.
Now, in IPL 2024, CSK will kick off their campaign with an exciting match against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai on Friday, March 22. With a new captain leading the team, the five-time IPL champions will be hoping to start their new journey with a victory.
