Mumbai Indians took another step closer to their fifth IPL trophy as they reached straight to the finals last night after defeating Delhi Capitals by 57 runs in the Qualifier. The loudest cheers came from their owners Nita Ambani and Aakash Ambani, who are often spotted cheering for their team from the stands.
Chasing a target of 201 runs, Delhi Capitals got off to a disastrous start as they were zero for three in the second over – losing both openers Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, and Ajinkya Rahane, who were dismissed on a duck. Skipper Shreyas Iyer tried to play optimistic cricket and bring a much-needed momentum to the game but lost to Bumrah as the pressure of the required run-rate started piling up.
Delhi Capitals’ failed to get going as Mumbai Indians bundled-up their batting line-up. A valiant partnership between Marcus Stoinis (65) and Axar Patel (42) helped Delhi Capitals finish at a respectable 143 for eight wickets. However, they couldn’t take their team to the winning sides and lost Qualifier 1 to Mumbai Indians by 56 runs.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians’ Hardik Pandya starred with the ball as he finished with four for 14 to take over the Purple Cap (27 wickets). Trent Boult also gave an impeccable performance and picked 2 wickets while conceding 9 runs in his two overs.
Earlier, riding on the powerful performance of Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan, Mumbai Indians were able to post a total of 200/5 in 20 overs.
After the match, Mumbai Indians shared a picture of Nita Ambani along with her message for the team, which read:
“Always backing the team through thick and thin ?
