Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who is currently plying his trade for Mumbai Indians int he ongoing 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League, has shared significant insights about Team India’s strategies for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Rohit Sharma recently joined the renowned Club Prairie Fire podcast alongside Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan, among others. During the discussion, the Indian captain addressed the speculation surrounding him and Virat Kohli opening in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Rohit Sharma Rubbishes Reports Of Virat Kohli Opening With Him In World Cup
Contrary to the reports, Rohit clarified that there is no truth to these rumors. He emphasized that unless there is an official announcement from India’s head coach Rahul Dravid or chief selector Ajit Agarkar, any other reports about the team should not be taken seriously.
“We haven’t met so far, we haven’t decided who’ll open at the World Cup (on him and Kohli opening). In today’s age, until and unless you don’t hear from me, Rahul bhai or Ajit bhai, everything else is fake.” – Rohit Sharma said via Club Prairie Fire podcast.
IPL 2024 holds significant importance not just for Indian players but also for foreign participants, as it serves as an audition for all. Performances in the tournament can trigger various speculations, such as the discussions around Virat Kohli’s role as an opener. Despite leading the Orange Cap race with 361 runs from 7 matches at an impressive average, Kohli’s efforts haven’t translated into success for the struggling Royal Challengers Bangalore, who find themselves at the bottom of the table.
Reports suggest that a provisional list of top 10 players for the T20 World Cup has emerged, confirming names like Hardik Pandya, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant. However, uncertainties remain regarding who will partner Rohit Sharma as the opener. Additionally, there’s speculation about whether Shubman Gill or Yashasvi Jaiswal will secure a spot in the team, as well as uncertainty surrounding the selection of either Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh for the middle order.
Meanwhile, half of Team India leaves for T20 World Cup a week early, the rest join after the final. India starts against Ireland on June 5, then faces Pakistan on June 9, followed by matches against USA and Canada on June 12 and 15.
