[Olympic] IOC Approve The Inclusion Of T20 Cricket In Los Angeles 2028 Games

Cricket will be included in the Olympic Games for just the second time in the event’s storied history, and the athletic world is vibrating with anticipation. The executive members of the International Olympic Committee approved this momentous news on a sunny Friday, October 13, 2023.

In the magnificent backdrop of Paris during the 1900 Olympics, cricket made its Olympic debut. Sports fans all around the world were captivated by cricket since it was one of only 18 sports included in the Games. Cricket’s gold medal match between Great Britain and France was a nail-biter that will go down in Olympic history books. Given that the Netherlands and Belgium had already withdrawn, this was the only cricket match played at the Olympics.

The decision to include cricket in the 2028 Olympics is monumental for the development of cricket. International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said the decision was made after a request from the Los Angeles organisers. The T20 version of cricket, the quickest and most exciting in international competition, will be included in the Games. This format was chosen to represent cricket on the biggest platform because of its spectacular thrill and widespread popularity.

Not only will cricket make its Olympic debut in 2028, but so will many other sports. The International Olympic Committee has approved the inclusion of five sports, including Twenty20 cricket, in an effort to increase the variety of events at the Olympics.

“Following a review by the Olympic Programme Commission, the IOC Executive Board puts the @LA28 Organising Committee’s additional sports proposal to the IOC Session. Baseball/softball, cricket (T20), flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash are the 5 sports submitted,” IOC media posted on X.

The decision to include these five thrilling sports in the 2028 Olympics is historic, but their presence is not yet certain. The members of the International Olympic Committee are expected to vote in a poll next Monday. These sports’ inclusion at the 2028 Games is contingent on passing this vote.
