On This Day: Virat Kohli Announced Himself As The Chase Master In Hobart

This game was a breeding ground for Kohli’s mastery of the chase. Virat Kohli cemented his position as an international superstar for India on a wonderful day in Hobart on February 28, 2012, with one of the most iconic one-day international innings ever.

With 160 from Tilakaratne Dilshan and 100 from Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka set a daunting total of 321. India got off to a good start in their pursuit. Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar scored 54 runs in a little over six overs, setting the tone for the game. Neither of the openers was able to convert their promising starts into big scores before they departed. At that time, Kohli became the showstopper thanks to his partnership with Gautam Gambhir.

Incredible aggressiveness from Kohli was on display even when Sri Lanka’s bowling attack included Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Farveez Mahroof, and Rangana Herath. He started his innings on a high note by easily hitting Malinga’s yorker for a boundary. They reached 100 runs as a pair when Gambhir was dismissed at 63 runs. With 121 runs needed off 76 balls, India had an enormous challenge on their hands.

Joined by Suresh Raina, Kohli unleashed an onslaught that would be remembered in cricket history. Kohli stunned spectators and players alike with a run streak in Malinga’s 35th over, scoring 24 runs.

India achieved one of the most exciting chases in cricket history, achieving the goal in 36.4 overs, all because of Kohli’s masterful performance. He scored 133 runs unbeaten on 86 balls, demonstrating his extraordinary technique and tenacity.
