Ducks are not very uncommon in white ball cricket because the players go through phases where they have to go after the bowling from ball one and that increases the possibility of them losing their wickets cheaply or even without scoring a run.
Here are the 5 teams with the most number of ducks in ODI cricket:
#1 Pakistan (658)
Pakistan topping the chart of the most no. of ducks is not surprising because most of the Pakistani batsmen over the years have been very inconsistent in white ball cricket. Pakistan definitely has produced some great white ball batsmen as well, but batting has never been Pakistan’s strength. It’s always been bowling.
#2 Sri Lanka (629)
The Sri Lankan team often plays on decks which turn a lot. Generally, in white ball cricket all around the world, the pitches are flat and are batsman-friendly, but that has not necessarily been the case in Sri Lanka in the last 10 years. There has been a lot of spin on offer because of which it’s never easy for a new batsman to walk in and get going.
Also, Sri Lanka always has a very weak tail and their bowlers have not been good enough to contribute too much with the bat. The ducks scored by the Sri Lankan tail-enders has also taken Sri Lanka’s total ducks’ tally pretty high.
#3 West Indies (599)
The West Indies players don’t believe too much in building the innings in One Day cricket. They always have this tendency or urge to play the big shots straightaway and while it makes for great viewing when they are on song, that is still high risk cricket and that is the reason behind a lot of ducks scored by the West Indies batsmen.
#4 India (593)
The Indian team has played the most no. of One Day Internationals in the history of the game, so it’s not really a surprise that their ducks’ tally is very high too. Although India is a land of batsmen and India’s strength has always been their batting, but because of the fact that they have played a lot of games, the total no. of ducks is higher than some other teams.
#5 Australia (559)
Australia is second on the list of playing the most no. of ODIs after India. While Australia are very dominant playing at home or even in countries like South Africa and New Zealand where there is a bit of bounce in the wicket, they often fail miserably when they tour subcontinent because of the lack of pace in the subcontinent surfaces.
A lot of ducks by the Australian batsmen in ODI cricket have come in subcontinent.
