PAK vs IND: Gautam Gambhir Slams Rohit Sharma For His Dismissal

PAK vs IND: The dismissal of Rohit Sharma on September 10 in a dramatic match between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023 Super Four contest in Colombo was a turning point in the game. Former cricketer and current politician Gautam Gambhir was quite critical of Rohit Sharma’s mistimed shot that altered the game’s outcome.

In the Super Four match, India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, got things going well. Before rain stopped play, he contributed greatly to India’s solid score of 147/2 in 24.1 overs. Rohit’s batting displayed an even keel between aggressiveness and subtlety, as he scored 56 runs off of 49 balls. His dismissal, though, caused cricket fans and experts to take notice. Well-known for his forthright opinions and insightful analysis, Gautam Gambhir lost no time in voicing his displeasure after Rohit Sharma’s expulsion. According to him, Rohit’s slide may be traced back to a poor decision in terms of shot selection.

On Star Sports’ postgame show, Gambhir said, “I feel he will be extremely disappointed. The way Rohit Sharma got out, it was an extremely bad shot. He himself knows that shot deserves to be criticized because Pakistan were down and out at that stage.”

This frank evaluation by Gambhir shows how competitive cricket is and how much is expected of players like Rohit Sharma. Pakistan was given a window of chance to recover after the removal of the Indian captain.

There was a time throughout the game when it seemed like India would set a challenging goal of 370-375 runs. An outstanding 121-run partnership was put up by Rohit Sharma and his opening partner Shubman Gill. Nonetheless, the complexion of the game radically shifted with the removal of Rohit and the following departure of Shubman Gill in the very next over.

When Rohit went for a big shot, Shadab Khan got him out when the ball fell into the clutches of Faheem Ashraf at long-off. Soon after Rohit departed, Shubman Gill was taken out by Shaheen Shah Afridi, who used a slower ball disguised as a fast one, giving Agha Salman an easy catch at cover. With this double whammy, Pakistan was able to retake the initiative.

The necessity of not allowing a powerful bowling attack like Pakistan’s any breathing room was correctly emphasised by Gautam Gambhir. Rohit Sharma’s removal served as a sobering reminder that even little errors in judgement may have far-reaching repercussions in international cricket.

He said: “At one point, it seemed India might score 370-375. Rohit Sharma played a bad shot and Shubman Gill got out in the very next over. You don’t want to give even the slightest window to a bowling attack like Pakistan.”

The points Gambhir makes are valid ones. As one of the most seasoned Indian cricketers, Rohit Sharma is counted on to make calculated, level-headed stroke choices when the team is in a strong position. His removal gave Pakistan a chance to mount a comeback, demonstrating that in cricket matches between India and Pakistan, there are no genuinely one-sided victories.
