- Australia captain Pat Cummins continues to break records as a bowler and as a captain. After he took a five-wicket haul in the 3rd Ashes 2023 Test, at Headingley, which is his first five-for in England in Ashes matches, Pat Cummins became only the second-ever Australian captain to take a five-wicket haul in England vs England.
Pat Cummins finished with figures of 6/91, although expensive, his spell included dismissals of Duckett, Brook, and the big wicket of Joe Root at the start of Day 2 in Leeds. The Australian skipper’s stunning effort with the ball meant England were bowled out for 237 in reply to Australia’s 263, with Australia taking a slender 26 runs lead.
Pat Cummins joins a rare list of Australian captains with five-fers in England vs England:

Australian captains to take five-wicket hauls in England vs England:
Richie Benaud – 6/70, 1961, Manchester
Pat Cummins – 6/91, 2023, Leeds
Before the Leeds 2023 Test, Cummins had 43 wickets in 9 Tests in England at an average of 22 with a best of 4/32.
Australia have dominant hand, England barely alive
Despite bowling Australia out for 263 on Day 1, courtesy of Mark Wood’s five-wicket haul, England remained behind in the game as they were bowled out for 237 by Tea on Day 2. Aussie captain Pat Cummins took his first five-wicket haul on English soil as Australia took a slender lead of 26 runs.
With plenty of time left in the game, Australia would want to bat for as long as possible and bat England out of the game. England, though, would be ready to go after any target as they have to win the match to keep the series alive.
