Prithvi Shaw Writes A Letter For Fans After BCCI Banned Him For Doping

In some surprising turn of events, Indian test opener Prithvi Shaw was recently banned by BCCI for doping charges. He has been banned for a period of eight months from all the formats of the game as a banned substance Terbutaline was found in the results of his urine tests.

Prithvi’s suspension is backdated from the day of the collection of his urine sample, i.e February 22 of this year and it will expire on November 15th of this year.

On February 22nd, as a part of the BCCI’s anti-doping rules (ADR), Prithvi Shaw gave his urine sample on the day of Mumbai’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Punjab in Indore. The sample was sent to WADA-accredited National Dope Testing Laboratory in New Delhi, where Terbutaline was detected in his urine sample.

As per the final report prepared by Dr. Abhijit Salvi, BCCI’s anti-doping manager, Prithvi Shaw had waived his right to have his B sample tested and accepted the charge, two days after the findings were out.

“Terbutaline, a specified substance, is prohibited both In and Out of Competition in the WADA Prohibited List of Substances,” the BCCI release stated.

“Prithvi Shaw registered with Mumbai Cricket Association, has been suspended for doping violation,” the BCCI said.

Yesterday, Prithvi Shaw took to his Twitter and shared a letter for his fans after he was banned for doping. In his letter, he revealed that he consumed a cough syrup, which contained the banned substance because he had a severe cough and cold, during the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament.

He revealed as he was coming back off a foot injury, he was eager to get back into playing and thus took the cough syrup to get rid of the cough and cold, unaware of the banned substance present in it.

Buddy, you are hell of a talent. Dont get spoiled with all these small unsubstantiated incidents. Good that this thing happened at this early stage of your career. You have ample time to recover. But I must tell, you are bit of unlucky as well. Take care and come back stronger.

Dude, I’m a physician. Terbutaline is a common bronchodilator present in many cough syrups. Quite understandable that a young cricketer wouldn’t have expected a banned substance to be in a cough syrup.
