South Africa’s Quinton de Kock has gone past Australia’s Adam Gilchrist to create a special record following his superb century against India in the third ODI in Cape Town.
Quinton de Kock registered his 17th ODI century on Sunday, and sixth versus India, as the Indian bowlers went flat.
All of de Kock’s 17 ODI hundreds have come as an opener while being the team’s designated wicket-keeper. This is now a new record in one-day internationals going past the legendary Adam Gilchrist. Gilchrist had recorded 16 ODI tons while batting as an opener and being the team’s wicket-keeper.
Astonishingly, de Kock has broken this record in 123 innings, which is even less than half of the total innings Gilchrist played in this role – 259- for his 16 centuries, once again highlighting the rich vein of form de Kock has been in white-ball cricket throughout his career.
Overall for designated wicket-keepers, Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara has hit 23 ODI centuries, which Quinton de Kock is likely to overhaul going forward in his career.
Out of his 17 ODI hundreds, Quinton de Kock has slammed 6 of them against India, in just 16 innings, which is now the fewest innings taken by a batsman to six ODI 100s vs an opponent, and is just one short of Sanath Jayasuriya’s record of 7 ODI hundred against India.
Quinton De Kock brings up his best when he sees the Indian bowlers: he averages over 65 against the Men In Blue having scored over 1000 runs in just 16 knocks.

The left-hander’s century, which was brought up in 108 balls, helped South Africa go past 200 inside 35 overs, setting up the platform for a big finish.
In the second ODI, two days ago, de Kock had struck a quickfire 78-run knock off 66 balls on a slow surface, setting up South Africa’s chase of 288, and was awarded with the Man of the Match award.
