Veteran Indian spinner R Ashwin has finally replied to former cricketer Gautam Gambhir’s “Spirit of Cricket” tweet on Australian cricketer David Warner’s six off a bizarre delivery against Mohammed Hafeez during the semi-final of the T20 World Cup in Dubai on Thursday.
David Warner who played a stunning knock of 9 runs to help his team defeat Pakistan, bagged the spotlight for all the controversial reasons. Well, what happened was, during the first delivery of the eighth over, the ball accidentally slipped out of Haffez’s hand and reached Warner after a couple of bounces. Instead of ignoring the ball, David Warner smashed the ball for a stunning six-over-deep mid-wicket.

Although it was a legal shot off what was a no-ball but several cricketers and experts took to Twitter to slam the Australian star cricketer as they felt it was against the spirit of the game. Former Indian cricketer and World Cup hero Gautam Gambhir also took to his Twitter and took a dig at the Australian cricket team. In his tweet, Gambhir asked Ravichandran Ashwin about the ‘pathetic’ display of the spirit of the game shown by David Warner. He wrote:
“What an absolutely pathetic display of spirit of the game by Warner! #Shameful What say @ashwinravi99?”

For the unversed, Gambhir’s tweet was a sarcastic dig on a few Australian cricketers and fans who were giving ‘spirit of cricket’ lectures to Ashwin on ‘mankading’ incident.
Gambhir’s tweet went instantly viral as it kickstarted the debate on the spirit of cricket. An Aussie journalist criticized Gambhir for his tweet. The journalist wrote: “Bad take Gautam“.
The reply of the Australian journalist soon caught the attention of Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who came up with a befitting reply. In his reply, Ashwin backed Gambhir and made a valid point by writing: “His point is that if this is right , that was right. If that was wrong , this is wrong too. Fair assessment?”

In another reply, R Ashwin also praised Warner’s shot, indirectly stating that there was nothing wrong with Warner smashing the double-bouncer for a six. While replying to a fan, Ashwin wrote:
“Absolutely it was a wonderful hit by @davidwarner31??. Great shot”
