Ravi Shastri Admits Three Mistakes He Made In The 2019 World Cup: Team India head coach, Ravi Shastri’s term came to an end last month after completing the T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE. An International Cricket Council (ICC) trophy would have been the icing on the cake for the former Indian all-rounder, who had an incredible coaching position run. Under Shastri’s guidance, India competed in three International Cricket Council (ICC) competitions but failed to win.

Indian cricketers successfully qualified for the knockout round of the 2019 World Cup and the 2019-21 World Test Championship, but they failed to go beyond the group stage of the T20 World Cup in 2021. In terms of the 2019 competition, there have been various doubts made about the squad selection process. Ambati Rayudu was not picked despite captain Virat Kohli publicly admitting that he would be the no.4 batter in the International Cricket Council tournament lead-up.

What was the reasoning for putting Dhoni, Rishabh, and Dinesh together in one team?: Ravi Shastri

On the other hand, the team management decided to go with all-rounder Vijay Shankar. During a discussion of the occurrence, Shastri made it clear that he had no involvement in the squad selection. His dissatisfaction with India’s 15-man roster, which includes three wicketkeepers in MS Dhoni, Rishabh Pant, and Dinesh Karthik, did not go unnoticed. He also said that either Rayudu or Shreyas Iyer should have been included in the team for the World Cup.

“I had nothing to do with it” (team selection). However, the choice of three wicketkeepers for the World Cup did not sit well with me. Either Ambati or Shreyas may have entered the room. I couldn’t see the reasoning behind putting MS Dhoni, Rishabh [Pant], and Dinesh [Karthik] together,” Shastri expressed his views on the subject in an interview with The Times of India.

“I never interfered with the work of the selectors except when I was asked for comments or when I was participating in a general conversation,” stated Shastri. For those who are unfamiliar with Indian Cricket, they were rather good during the 2019 World Cup, finishing first in the league stages after winning seven of their nine matches.

Nevertheless, an 18-run loss to New Zealand in the semi-finals brought their path in the gala competition to an abrupt end. India was down to 24 for 4 in their chase of a target of 240 in Manchester until half-centuries from Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni maintained the Men in Blue in the quest for victory. The Indian team was ultimately defeated by 18 runs and eliminated from the tournament. Meanwhile, Rahul Dravid has taken over as India’s head coach from Ravi Shastri, and big expectations are being put on the former Indian captain.
