A recent post from the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Twitter handle has got the fans talking. Many fans believe that the post contains a hint about the franchise’s next captain.
Virat Kohli, after leading the side for 9 seasons, stepped down as the skipper at the end of last season, in which they lost the playoff match to Kolkata Knight Riders. Of the 140 matches under Kohli, RCB won 64, lost 69, and tied three games. They also reached the final of the 2016 IPL – but lost it to David Warner’s Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Now, as the search for their maiden title continues, RCB went into the IPL 2022 mega-auction on the lookout for a new captain. They may have just found it in Dinesh Karthik who was bought for 5.5 crore; a recent post indicates that.
Karthik, who has been around a number of franchises over the past 14 seasons, was with RCB for one season in 2015.
“A skilled finisher, brilliant with gloves behind the stumps and a natural leader. @DineshKarthik fits right into the team.” The franchise welcomed Dinesh Karthik back in their setup, including acknowledging Karthik’s leadership qualities.

Dinesh Karthik is not inexperienced as far as captaincy goes. He has been leading Tamil Nadu for a long time now and led them to the Syed Mushtaq Ali title a year ago. He also captained KKR in 2018 to the playoffs and had been leading the side well until the mid-2020 season when he handed the reins to Eoin Morgan.
However, another top contender for taking over RCB’s captaincy duties is Faf du Plessis, who the franchise purchased for 7 crore. Likely to open alongside Kohli, du Plessis is someone who has everyone’s respect as a batsman and a leader.
Faf has led his country tremendously in the past and could be asked by RCB to captain the franchise for one season, if not more.
Also, Glenn Maxwell, who was retained for 11 crore ahead of the auction, has captaincy experience with the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League; he has twice captained the Stars to the BBL final.
Maxwell had a brilliant season for RCB last year – scoring 513 runs at a strike rate of 144 in the team’s run to the playoffs. He has turned into a proper all-rounder with his off-spin now effective in wicket-taking as well.
