RCB vs SRH: If you were a minute or two late for Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Sunday afternoon game versus Sunrisers Hyderabad and saw Virat Kohli on your television trudging upward the dressing room staircase, with his head down still wearing his pads and helmet, and wondering what has happened – well, Kohli had just bagged his third golden duck of the season!
The batsman who was known as India’s run machine, who once churned out 4 centuries and 973 runs in the most extraordinary IPL season, is now finding it difficult to get into double figures: 6 of Kohli’s 12 innings in IPL 2022 have been single digits and two others were of 12 runs each.
Before this duck vs SRH, his two previous innings saw him score some runs but those came at a poor strike rate – 58 off 53 vs Gujarat Titans and 30 off 33 vs Chennai Super Kings. Despite a low strike rate, fans were happy that Kohli got some runs, and had been expecting him to turn up the switch against SRH at the Wankhede.
However, their dream turned into a nightmare they will want to forget as soon as possible but won’t be able to.
Knowing Kohli and Faf du Plessis’ struggles vs spinners, SRH skipper Kane Williamson gave the first over to left-arm spinner Jagadeesha Suchith. An absolutely innocuous delivery from Suchith on the leg stump and sliding down, with a one in a million rare chance of taking a wicket, took a wicket. In his pomp, a sort of delivery on his pads that Kohli would have easily put it away with his muscle memory not troubling his conscious.
But this is not Virat Kohli in form, this is Kohli in the atrocity. With a number of things riding on his mind, Kohli flick it away on the leg side but couldn’t keep the ball on the ground; the airborne ball went straight into the hands of SRH captain Kane Williamson who didn’t have to move at his short midwicket position.
Virat Kohli was distraught. Thousands at the Wankhede didn’t have an idea what just happened; millions at home were stunned. Harsha Bhogle in the commentary box unaccepting of this. Sitting beside Bhogle, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar was short of words.
Well, netizens on Twitter let their thoughts and opinions know by trolling the former RCB captain. Some suggested Kohli take a rest while some demanded Kohli be dropped for his poor form.
