Back into the side after being dropped from the WTC Final, Ravichandran Ashwin was at his best against West Indies in the first Test in Dominica as he returned with another five-wicket haul.

It took him only 3 overs to make his first strike and soon after his second, dismissing both the WI openers. He returned later on to clean things up in the lower order and complete a five-fer.

Here are some major records broken and achieved by Ravichandran Ashwin on Day 1 vs West Indies:

700 international wickets

Ashwin enters the elite tally of bowlers with 700 or more international wickets. He now has 702 international wickets to his name; among Indians, he’s third on the list, only behind Anil Kumble (953) and Harbhajan Singh (707).

33rd five-wicket haul in international cricket

Among Indians, only Kumble has more five-wicket hauls – 37 – than R Ashwin’s tally of 33. He’s likely to go past Kumble in this tally by the end of his career. Harbhajan Singh took 28 five-fers.

Ashwin has not got a single five-wicket haul in ODIs or T20Is; all his five-fers have come in Tests.

Ashwin left behind James Anderson, who has 32 five-fers in his Test career so far which is coming to an end.

R Ashwin now tops the list of most bowled dismissals by Indians bowlers in Test cricket. He has cleaned up batters 95 times, going past Kumble’s tally of 94 bowled dismissals.

65 wickets against West Indies

Ashwin has been phenomenal in Tests against West Indies. He’s taken 65 wickets in only 12 Tests against West Indies at an average of 21. Among Indians, three bowlers have taken more wickets against West Indies, but all three of them have a much higher average than Ashwin: Kapil Dev (89 wickets at 24), Kumble (74 wickets at 29), and S Venkataraghavan (68 wickets at 39).

Ashwin has 5 five-wicket hauls against West Indies in Tests, which is the 4th most in the world, and the joint-most by an Indian bowler; Harbhajan also had 5 five-fers vs WI.
