Here’s Why Ashish Nehra Rejected India’s T20I Head Coach Position: On Wednesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the extension of the contract for head coach Rahul Dravid and his staff. The contracts had reached their conclusion with the end of the Cricket World Cup 2023.

After Team India’s defeat in the World Cup 2024 final against Australia, there were speculations about the BCCI seeking a new coach, however, all parties involved ultimately agreed on extending Dravid’s tenure. The duration of the contract has not been disclosed.

Notably, the end of Rahul Dravid’s contract posed a significant challenge for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in identifying a suitable replacement for the crucial role in the team for the upcoming years. There were reports that before finalizing Dravid’s extension, the BCCI did approach Ashish Nehra, the coach of Gujarat Titans, to consider taking on the role of the head coach for the national team in the T20 format.

This decision raised considerable curiosity regarding why the coach of Gujarat Titans declined the role.

Why Ashish Nehra Rejected India’s T20I Head Coach Position?

The revelation behind Ashish Nehra’s decision to decline the role has now surfaced. According to reports from PTI, it is understood that the former fast bowler opted out due to his commitments with the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Additionally, there were some other factors contributing to his decision as well.

The reports also mentioned that Ashish Nehra wasn’t interested in taking on the head coach role because he wanted he “wants to honor his contract with GT till 2025”.. Moreover, the former Indian pacer didn’t want to be away from his family, especially since his children are young, and he prefers staying close to them.

Currently, he’s focused on two and a half months of IPL coaching. However, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of becoming a white-ball coach for the national team in the future when the timing is appropriate.
