The modern day batting is well defined by the batsmen which form the team of ‘Fab 4’ in cricket. This fabulous 4 consists of Aussie Skipper Steve Smith, Kiwis Skipper Kane Williamson, Joe Root and the Indian Captain, Virat Kohli.

These 4 are redefining form and consistency and have become a serious threat to every possible batting record that ever existed. The battle become even more fierce when it goes down to fab 2 which undoubtedly include Kohli and Smith.

But Ricky Ponting feels that Smith is the best batsman of the era and he has kept Smith before Kohli. Speaking from the Grandstand during the day 4 of the first Ashes Test, Ponting said that Steve Smith for him is the best batsman in modern day cricket. Steve Smith scored an unbeaten 141 and this came in at a time when Aussies were in a spot of bother at the Gabba.

Ponting further went on to compare Smith with Sachin and Kallis and said that what they’ve achieved, Smith is already half way there which is just splendid.

Smith was initially brought in as a bowler.

It was in 2010 that Steve Smith made his debut and the captain was Ricky Ponting. Ponting said that seeing Smith’s exponential growth he is really happy. Ponting also said that he was brought in as an off spinner initially and no one expected him to achieve this with the bat. Taking about Steve Smith’s century in the first test of the ongoing Ashes, Ponting said, “it was a leader’s inning and he has put his mark on the series at the first possible opportunity.”
