On the third anniversary of India’s epic win at the Gabba, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant recalled the brief chat he had with Rohit Sharma following the victory.
Rishabh Pant’s 89* in the chase of 328 helped India record an epic, almost unbelievable win at the Gabba in Brisbane, where Australia hadn’t lost for 32 years.
This win also meant that India clinched the series 2-1 – India’s second consecutive Test series win in Australia, but this time without a number of key players such as Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami, and coming from behind after the shambolic 36 all-out fiasco in the first Test in Adelaide. It all made for arguably India’s greatest Test series win of all time.
Pant, who hadn’t started the series in Adelaide but played memorable knocks in Sydney and Brisbane, didn’t celebrate it as wildly as the rest of the Indian players, who stormed into the ground once Pant sealed the chase with a straight drive boundary.
Rohit told me ‘I don’t think you realise what you have: Rishabh Pant

Amid the euphoria of the emotions flowing among the Indian players and coaches, Rohit Sharma observed that Rishabh Pant didn’t seem as excited as others.
Pant revealed that short conversation he had with Rohit, which made him realize the magnitude of his and the team’s achievement.
“I remember what Rohit Sharma said. A lot of people told me special things, but Rohit’s words, I remember it well. He was seeing my reaction. Everybody was happy, but he was not seeing me as excited as everyone else,” Pant told Star Sports.
“He told me ‘I don’t think you realise what you have done’. I told him ‘yeah, we won a match, we won a series here for the 2nd time’. He told me ‘when you quit cricket, you will understand the importance of this innings because you don’t know what you have done’.
“Then I realised what I had done,” he added.
Rishabh Pant is set to make his comeback in the IPL 2024 following his recovery from the injuries that he had sustained in a car accident in December 2022.
